Dear Golf Enthusiast,
Golf is a very popular activity that appeals to men and women of all ages. Many of my clients are golfers and they often ask Will doing strength training hurt my golf game? Unfortunately, many people have heard misconceptions that strength training will reduce their joint flexibility and make them bulky therefore affecting their range of motion during their golf swing. These assumptions are false and unfounded. In fact, quite the opposite is true.
Countless golfers benefit in many ways from a program of strength and flexibility. Why else would the PGA touring professionals have a semi trailer full of exercise equipment follow them to each event? A sensible strength program has been shown to improve strength, reduce low back pain, decrease arthritic discomfort, increase metabolism and deter many degenerative problems. A regular stretching routine is also beneficial. Flexibility helps prevent injury that can occur during a golf swing. It also helps increase maximum club head speed. Additional strength increases the movements force and additional flexibility increases the movements distance, both of which improve performance power.
Greater Strength + Greater Flexibility = Greater Driving Power.
A program that strengthens all the major muscle groups is most effective. The power of the golf swing originates in the large muscle groups of the lower body. Then the power is transmitted to the upper body through the midsection. Then power is finally transferred to the muscles largely responsible for the swinging action in the shoulders and arms. A golfer also needs to work on the muscles in their upper shoulders and neck in order to maintain a stable head position and eye focus throughout the dynamic swinging action.
Many golfers may not recognize poor physical function until they begin to function better. Many of my clients say they feel more energetic and less fatigued during their golf games. They also report that exercise contributes to better power performance and less injury and therefore they enjoy playing even more! I believe more importantly, if a golfer understands that exercise can be golf-enhancing, they may be more inclined to perform this life enhancing activity.
Here in Minnesota the golf season is just around the corner and pre-season preparation should begin now. If you have any question for me regarding a golf specific exercise program please call me at the number above. Id be glad to help in any way. Thank you and good luck.
Sincerely,
Mobile Gym
